Facing an April 2019 election, the fate of Indonesian President Joko Widodo is unknown as the country’s economy reaches lowest lows since the 1998 currency collapse.

Political risk analyst Kevin O’Rourke said polls show voters have strong concerns with the rising food prices, with the Federal Government needing to import 2 million tonnes of rice this year alone.

Blame for Indonesia’s currency slide has been placed on Mr Widodo, and coupled his choice of running mates for the upcoming election, it’s believed the Indonesian public will prioritise the economy over religion at the polls.
