The International Criminal Court or ICC has begun its preliminary investigation into Myanmar’s actions against the Muslim majority Rohingya, many of whom were forced to flee to Bangladesh border.

The investigation aims to examine all the available information as to determine whether there is a reasonable basis for proceeding with an investigation.

However, Myanmar argues that the ICC does not have the jurisdiction to undertake such an investigation due to it not being a state party to the Court, which was countered by the ICC Prosecutor’s, saying whilst Myanmar may not be a party, Bangladesh is, and therefore must investigate.

This comes as the prosecutors have stated that some Senior Myanmar military officials should be prosecuted for war crimes and genocide
