Federal Government announces new criminal charges for food tampering following strawberry snafu

The Federal Government has increased the penalty sentence for food tampering from 10 maximum to 15 years maximum following 100 reports of contaminated fruit starting with a Queensland man eating a strawberry with a needle inside.

Additionally, the government has created new ‘reckless conduct’ offenses which would cover actions such as hoaxes and social media posts showing tampered fruit which would also have 10-year penalties attached to them

These new laws will not act retrospectively so only future offenses of this kind will be covered under these new laws
