A threatening letter has been sent to the Special Air Service regiment headquarters in Perth, warning against helping an inquiry looking into allegations of misconduct and war crimes by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan.
The letter detailed activities of members of patrols between 2009 and 2011 with Victoria Cross recipient Ben Smith being held accountable for serious breaches of laws in armed conflict.
Defence sources state the author of the letter is unlikely to be uncovered but the letter’s intent was to scare witnesses from assisting the inquiry.
