After revoking Byron Shire Council’s citizenship rights for their statements on moving Australia Day, the Prime Minister Scott Morrison is suggesting Indigenous history be celebrated separate to Australia Day.

The PM’s plan, with the support of Indigenous Government frontbencher Ken Wyatt is to create a new public holiday for indigenous celebrations over any attempt to move Australia Day from January 26.

While not naming a date, Mr Morrison noted the ACT holds a public holiday celebrating the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the census.
