A Gold Coast domestic violence refuge, which is one of Australia’s only pet friendly ones, is on the brink of closure because of a lack of funding.

Based at Palm Beach, The Sanctuary Women, Children and Pet’s Refuge offers those fleeing domestic violence situations a place to stay with their furry companions—instead of using emergency fosters. In its two and a half years of operation, it’s helped 118 people and 38 pets to safety. But without funding to replace the old twin cab ute that’s at its end, which removes families and animals from dangerous situations, it will have to close down.

Founder and CEO, Simone Patterson, says the refuge has applied for funding and grants but have had no luck. A Go Fund Me has been set up for the refugee, however only $400 has been raised as of Wednesday.
