Tasmania could become the first state to scrap gender from birth certificates, the issue will be debated in parliament next month.

The sex of a baby would no longer be recorded under new legislation.

The Greens are supporting this, fighting for a person’s right to change the gender on their birth certificate without undergoing invasive surgery.

Transgender activists say the gender requirement causes unnecessary distress, and this new bill would allow people to dictate their own gender as they grow up.
