Three US whistleblowers have revealed to Australian journalists over a million Australian drivers have been put at risk due to cheaply designed airbags.

These airbags are seen to possibly spontaneously explode, sending shards of metal at over 300km/h into drivers faces.

The airbags, produced by automotive company Takata, contain an unstable yet inexpensive chemical, ammonium nitrate.
