Deb Haaland is tipped to become first Native American woman in US Congress.

Ms Haaland will make history at the US midterm elections on 6 November, if she wins New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District. Current polls put her up to ten per cent ahead of her opponent.

The single mother, who once had to apply for food stamps to put meals on the table, says she can relate to the everyday struggles of those living in New Mexico, and other Native Americans.

In an interview she said Native Americans and minority groups across the country are ready for change and she encourages other women to take on leadership positions.
