You could soon be fined $200 for lighting up on Byron Bay beach thanks to a new push by Byron Shire Council to reduce cigarette butt litter.

Smoking has recently been banned on the beach and rangers sent out to issue fines to anyone caught after the council conducted a waste audit of the region in 2017 and found 80% of litter was cigarette butts.

It is the latest move in the Butt Free Byron Shire campaign, which launched in April and has already helped to reduce cigarette butt litter in the region by 28%.
