Animal rights activists in South Korea celebrate today as the country’s largest canine slaughterhouse closes amid rising international pressure.

Campaigners from Humane Society International describe conditions inside as horrifying, telling reporters they found electrocution equipment, knives, a de-hairing machine and piles of abandoned dog carcasses.

The close reflects a change in attitude towards eating dog meat in South Korea, with the practise now considered taboo by the younger generation who prefer dogs as pets.
