Uganda’s government is proposing regulations to govern the music and entertainment industry. Among regulations are a range of restrictions requiring artists to submit lyrics for songs and scripts for film and stage performances.

Musicians and other artists must also register with the government and obtain a practising license which can be revoked for a range of violations.

People in the industry have criticised the rules meant as an attempt to intimidate artists critical of the government, with Uganda human rights lawyers calling the regulations as a ‘punishing political move’.
