The 2000 hectare conservation habitat for the black throated finch has been removed from Adani’s conservation plans last year, mostly being redistributed to land used for the nearby China Stone coal mine.

The Indian mining company has also stated intent to allow cattle to graze on the remaining conservation areas, with the Environmental Defenders Office saying the removal of the conservation areas was due to difficulties Adani had in legally securing their proposed offset areas.

Ecologist April Reside has said the finch has been driven to the verge of extinction and survives only in areas that have been lightly grazed.
