The grief-stricken family of dead German tourist Monika Billen, have pleaded for tighter safety requirements to protect hikers in Central Australia.

Some of the safety suggestions made by the family include mandatory GPS trackers, detailed logs, and checkpoints at each stop, but the Northern Territory Parks Department claims this is not the only answer.

Senior director of Parks and Wildlife Operations, Chris Day, said, "You still need to take precautions and avoid walking in the heat of the day, wear appropriate clothing and take food and water."
