A young woman has organised an alternative to Australia Day in Darwin, simply calling it ‘January 26th’.

This Saturday, a panel of indigenous speakers - including a state government member - will take part in a talk on the country’s national day at Darwin’s Civic Park.

The event has been planned independently by young Darwin woman Jessie Bonson, who titled it without mention of invasion or mourning out of concern about who that might alienate, saying she believes many in the wider community simply remain unaware of the date’s precise historical significance and what it symbolises.
