New laws proposed by the Liberal National Party would see Queensland motorists involved in road rage attacks fined thousands of dollars and spending up to five years in jail.

Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington says the terrifying scenes of violence on Queensland roads has to stop.

Proposed penalties range from 18 months behind bars for drivers to lose their cool, to 5 years jail time for predatory drivers who physically threaten or chase others.

A three-year license ban may be slapped on road-ragers, with repeat offenders receiving a five-year ban.
