More than 100 people have been detained in Nicaragua’s capital city during protests on Saturday where anti-government protesters demanded the President release political prisoners.

President Daniel Ortega reportedly led a “violent crackdown” on anti-government demonstrations last April, which has since seen more than 325 people killed and 770 people jailed as political prisoners.

The protest was said to be the first march since the demonstrations were banned, and came the day after President Ortega released 50 political prisoners amid mounting international pressure and renewed calls to restart stalled peace talks with opposition groups.
