Brisbane councillors have been put on notice to be careful of what they say if council meetings become livestreamed, proposed to begin on the 7th of May.

A trial of the stream will occur at the meeting next week and, if successful, will mean every meeting is streamed once council returns from autumn recess.

Mayor Quirk, who supported Greens councillor for the Gabba Jonathan Sri’s original suggestion to stream the meetings, reminded councillors they do not have parliamentary privilege, which would protect them from defamation lawsuits stemming from anything they say in meetings.

As a result, all councillors are required to sign an indemnity form before meetings resume.
