From July this year Australians wanting to fly drones will now have to register for a “flyer’s license” so they are accredited by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) in order to make it easier for police to track down wrongdoers.

This new rule comes in just as the world’s first drone food delivery business based in Canberra is set to begin.

CASA’s spokesman, Peter Gibson, said ”it will certainly give us big advantages in terms of complaints or reports of drones being flown improperly or against the safety rules [because] we’ll have a starting point to know who flies drones in that area [and] what sort of drone they fly.”

Flyer data will be stored in a database which will allow Australian authorities to get an idea of how many drones are being flown in Australia as well as who is flying them and where they are being flown.
