Plans for a $3 billion tunnel under Stonehenge have garnered widespread criticism amid fears they may cause “considerable damage” to the prehistoric wonder.

The British Government announced plans to plunge a two kilometre tunnel underneath the World Heritage site, replacing the A303 highway connecting London with south-west England.

A recent United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) report said the proposal is “not adequate to protect the authenticity, integrity and outstanding universal value of the property.”
