A public health emergency has been declared in parts of Brooklyn by New York’s Mayor, Bill de Blasio, ordering all residents to get the measles vaccination.
The order comes as a way to try and contain a measles outbreak which is primarily concentrated in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.
It is concerning people living in areas where some residents oppose vaccines on religious grounds.
Mr de Blasio said, “it was time to take a more muscular approach."
The new rule means that anyone that does not receive the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine or doesn’t have evidence of immunity risks a fine of $1000.
