A new United Nations committee report has found life saving medical procedures, such as surgeries, are becoming increasingly risky due to alarming levels of resistance to antimicrobial drugs.

The authors of the report, who have named this issue a “global crisis”, wrote that common diseases, such as tuberculosis, are becoming untreatable in all countries of all income levels as a result of resistance to antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiprotozoals.

The report also outlined that at least 700,000 annual deaths globally are a result of drug-resistance diseases and, as such, unless global action is taken, it is estimated that up to 10 million people could die each year by 2030.
