Crowd-sourced social media photos have helped create new insights into how New South Wales beaches have responded to changing weather and wave conditions, including extreme storms.

The images are part of a citizen science project called Coastsnap, led by engineers from the University of New South Wales Water Research Laboratory and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.

UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering spokesperson and study leader, Dr Mitchell Harley, has said the study published in the Coasting Engineering journal has gathered critical shoreline information which will be used to assist coastal managers in reducing the risk of coastal erosion.
