Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam has denied the former British colony will lose its distinct identity as part of an economic plan to link the city with mainland China.

The Chinese government’s Greater Bay Area economic plan is causing concern in Hong Kong that Beijing is attempting to erode the “One Country, Two Systems” principle that gives Hong Kong unique freedoms including a separate legal system.

Mrs Lam has pledged to safeguard the rule of law in the city and says Hong Kong can take advantage of commercial opportunities on mainland China without jeopardising its independence.
