An invaluable and engaging learning opportunity with a world class orchestra

Lights, Camera, Action is the second of the 2019 Learning Concerts series, designed for students between Years 5 and 8 to broaden their understanding of classical orchestral music to Discover, Explore and Engage children.

The stage was full of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra musicians and instruments to entertain and educate the excited audience with movie blockbuster themes. The Hollywood conductor and presenter Cameron Patrick is an Annie Award nominee and AGSC Screen Music Award winner, whose screen experience spans 30 years. He is an accomplished composer and orchestrator of music for film and television, with credits that include: Star Trek Beyond (2016); Star Trek (2009); John Carter (2012); Spider-man: Homecoming (2017);  Zootopia (2016);  Jurassic World (2015) and Inside Out (2015) amongst many others.

Cameron introduced himself as a Brisbane boy from Yeronga High school and Griffith University. He was an inspirational and excellent host, as well as an accomplished conductor, guiding the youthful audience through a gamut of film themes divided into categories such as atmospheric movies like the Harry Potter theme, or having them shiver to the theme from the horror, The Shining. The orchestra demonstrated how film music is scored to affect the audience’s emotions. This was perfectly demonstrated when a couple of girls in the second row were surprised when they started crying to the melancholic theme from the movie Up

There was plenty of audience participation, with Cameron asking for suggestions of emotions linked to some of the themes, and he even had schools determining en masse the genre of a piece between an adventure movie, fantasy, romance, tragedy and war. The students had great fun standing and sitting down when their particular theme fitted with the movie excerpts. Cameron also described how music helped characterise movie characters such as the evil and petulant Kylo-Renn, and the brave Rey from the Star Wars series.

The highlights of the show were the Jaws theme, when all of the QSO screamed, and the finale with The Avengers theme, which had every student humming along as they imagined their favourite Marvel hero.

I recommend all schools take advantage of the fabulous Learning Concert series, which gives children access to a world class orchestra and includes Key learning points of the Australian curriculum. As part of the Learning Concerts series, students have the opportunity to attend and watch an open rehearsal of a professional orchestra to understand how the Queensland symphony Orchestra work together to produce a concert. Guest conductor Daniel Blendulf will be working with the QSO on Friday 7th June as they prepare for the Saturday night Maestro concert, Soulful Journeys. The next Learning concert is The New World on the 9th August. Bookings and schedules are on the QSO website.
