A Virgin Australia trial of low-carbon sustainable aviation fuels has reached one million kilometres in less than a year on more than 700 test flights.

The trial is testing a blend of conventional and sustainable jet fuel and is being conducted in partnership with the Queensland Government, Brisbane Airport Corporation and US-based biofuel producer Gevo.

Virgin Australia chief legal and risk officer Dayna Field says the trial demonstrated the viability of low-carbon fuel and will have a positive environmental impact on the aviation industry, which currently represents about two per cent of man-made carbon dioxide emissions.
