The New York City Police Department is updating its rules to better address safety and medical concerns after a woman was forced to give birth in handcuffs.

New York state law prohibits shackling pregnant prisoners during labour and delivery, but police accompanying the woman left her in chains anyway.

New York City agreed to pay $610,000 US dollars to the mother who gave birth to a nearly 8 pound baby while being handcuffed on the bed.
