Up to 150 people are feared to have drowned after two migrant boats capsized in an attempt to cross from Libya to Europe on Thursday.
According to the coastguard, another 137 passengers were rescued and brought back to Libya.
UN High Commissioner for refugees spokesman, Charlie Yaxley, says the tragedy opens up again the necessity of taking urgent action and offering safe and legal alternatives that prevent people from taking boats.
