India has lessened the conflicted Indian state of Kashmir’s autonomous status in an administrative change the foreign ministry says is aimed at promoting good governance, social justice and economic development.

These changes are the biggest seen in recent decades and mean Kashmir will not have the ability to create its own laws and Indian citizens will be able to reside there.

The state is hotly contested with neighbouring country Pakistan, which labels India's move as against the United Nations and ”illegal”.
