The Aged Care Royal Commission has found a subcontractor demanded $3 million the day before Gold Coast Retirement Village was unexpectedly closed, leading to dozens of elderly residents being taken away by ambulances.

Earle Haven Retirement Village closed on July 11 following a request by managing aged care provider Help Street for the $3 million from People Care as a solution for breach of contract.

HelpStreet chief executive Kris Bunker told the commission they were concerned they would not be able to trade without payment from People Care.
