The United Nations has voiced its concern after India revoked Kashmir’s special status in its constitution, a move which is escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

On Monday, the Indian government revoked article 370 of the constitution which guaranteed special rights to the Muslim-majority state of Kashmir, including its autonomy to make laws on all affairs except defence, communications and foreign affairs.

India sent thousands of troops on top of those already in the contested region, imposing a curfew and shutting down telecommunications and Internet, as well as arresting politicians.
