The Gold Coast light rail line and several Bruce Highway projects have been approved by Infrastructure Australia this week.
The rail line is set to ease congestion between Broadbeach and Burleigh, which the Queensland Government estimated to cost $38 million last year.
However, with 88% of trips made by private vehicle, Infrastructure Australia chief executive Romilly Madew says that the Queensland government and local council would have to be proactive in "encouraging more residents to leave the car at home and use the light rail instead".
Ms Madew also acknowledged the highway upgrades, saying that the Deception Bay Road Interchange upgrade would improve the key connection and accommodate for freight travelling to Brisbane.
