A Chinese businessman has cloned his beloved cat Garlic at a commercial pet-cloning company in Beijing-based Sinogene. The company has already cloned more than 40 dogs — at a cost of about AU$78,000 each.

Yu’s cloned cat, born July 21 with the same white-and-grey skin pattern as Garlic, cost him more than AU$50,000. It was the company’s first successful cat clone.

Sinogene says it hopes to use its technology for public good, such as the possibility of cloning endangered giant pandas or South China tigers.
