Queensland residents are chipping in and providing their tank water supplies to assist firefighters, despite above-ground water supplies being scarce due to a lack of rainfall.

The town of Stanthorpe suffered major water shortages due to drought and the fires that reached the area on Friday.

Dams in the Southern Downs region ran out of water prior to the outbreak of the bushfires- with many residents providing access to their own water sources as a means to aid the firefighting effort.

Acting Premier Jackie Trad assured that "all water that is being used, both private dams…and drinking water, will be replenished by the state".
