A recent survey has found that Australian’s largely support big businesses standing up for social and environmental issues.

The Committee for Economic Development surveyed 3000 people and found that at least four in every five respondents say corporate leaders should offer their opinion on issues that are being debated.

The survey also found however that people and businesses are at odds over where company profits should go, with businesses arguing they should go to shareholders whilst ordinary Australian’s say it should go into better wages and conditions for workers.

The federal government has previously voiced its opposition to big businesses getting involved in what it labels “distractions”, instead arguing companies should focus on their own performance to ensure the employment and welfare of workers.
