Former US President Barack Obama says presidents in office should avoid social media and cable news at an event for an international data and software firm.

The criticism is suspected to be targeted at President Donald Trump, who posted an average of 284 tweets per month over the last six months.

Mr Obama said spending time on social media and focusing on how polls and media portray you can make it more difficult to run the country effectively.

You can make sure you have a team that is distilling info as effectively as possible so you can get a basic framework for what the problem is,” Mr Obama said.

Mr Obama also expressed concerns about the division and polarization he thought was accelerated by the platforms.
