A Gold Coast woman has been fined more than $300 after being caught driving down a motorway with two dogs free in her car, one sitting on her lap.

The Queensland Police shared footage showing one of the dogs hanging out the window, and one sitting behind the wheel.

Police warn that failing to secure pets in the car puts the safety of road users, passengers and pets at risk.

The RSPCA says more than 5000 animals are killed every year in crashes in Australia.
