The Shake and Stir Theatre Company have created yet another exceptional adaptation of a classic novel. This time Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë is showcasing at the Cremorne Theatre, QPAC. Directed by Michael Futcher and adapted by Nelle Lee and Nick Skubij, this production has remained true to the beloved story whilst making it unique and original to other productions of the novel.
Jane Eyre follows the story of the titular character who grows up as a mistreated orphan into a well-educated governess at Thornfield Hall, home to Mr. Rochester. Jane matures into a capricious life, without the support of family, and such is independent and self-reflective.
This adaptation utilised four actors to bring the novel to stage. Jane was played by Nelle Lee, and the other actors, Sarah McLeod, Helen Howard, and Anthony Standish made up the rest of the cast, each switching between roles for the remainder of the characters. All the actors did an excellent job in their roles, seamlessly switching between characters with the use of only simple costumes, to create a distinctly different character.
The performance was held on a multi-levelled stage, that while it looked simple, was utilised to create the effect of a multitude of different locations. It made the performance even more enjoyable to watch as the story was told using the many levels, resulting in interesting movement on stage. The stage also demonstrated an amazing display of pyrotechnics, that engulfed the stage in flames. This had the audience astounded, and a little terrified at the effective display in front of them.
The atmosphere of the performance was eerie and chilling, as only minimal lighting was used throughout to create this effect. This added to the uncertainty and suspense of the play as well as the underlying supernatural elements of the story.
The production included original music by Aria award winning Sarah McLeod who performed live on stage. She sang and played piano to accompany events and the action taking place, while still being an involved character. The music and her performance was beautiful, complimenting the story very well and adding to the ambience of the performance.
As a fan of the book I loved seeing this production with a contemporary twist, as I felt it was well suited to the context of the novel. Whether you have read the book or not, you will love this adaption of Jane Eyre.
