This week Australia joined 22 other countries to condemn China at the United Nations over its horrifying treatment of the Uighur ethnic minority within its borders.

The Uighures are a Muslim minroity group native to Xinjiang, thhat China has been systematically targeting them in attempt to stamp out their culture.

“We call on the Chinese government to uphold its national laws and international obligations and commitments to respect human rights, including freedom of religion or belief, in Xinjiang and across China,” Britain’s UN Ambassador Karen Pierce said on Wednesday.

China itself dismissed Ms Pierce’s statement as “slander” and accused her of using human rights as an excuse to “interfere in others’ domestic affairs.”
