The World Monuments Fund (WMF) has added 25 of the world’s most remarkable sites to a 2020 “watch list”, which highlights threatened attractions that are in urgent need of protection.
WMF shared in a statement the sites “are facing daunting threats such as encroaching urbanisation, political turmoil, natural disaster, and violent conflicts, or present compelling conservation opportunities”.
The organisation listed Chile’s Easter Island, Peru’s Sacred Valley near Machu Picchu, Utah’s Bears Earns National Monument and Haiti’s Gingerbread neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince as some of the culturally significant sites under threat.
