The Swiss-based GEO Global Agricultural Monitoring Initiative, or Geoglam, have used satellite images to disclose how drought has damaged crops around North Korea- with the main harvest provinces estimated to have produced a below-average output.

Irregular rainfall and low reservoir levels during Summer have led to a worsening of the nation's overall food situation- with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation stating that poor harvests in September resulted in 10 million people needing urgent assistance.

Tensions between North and South Korea have ultimately impeded efforts to provide food aid to the country, as the North refused to accept the 50,000 tonnes of rice from South Korea, following the stalled talks between Pyongyang and the US regarding their nuclear programme.
