Canberra looks likely to commit to a car-free day next year, joining cities like Paris, Mexico City and Jakarta in closing off the city to vehicles for World Car Free Day.
The Conservation Council wants the ACT Government to commit to a car-free day before the next election.
Some have criticised the move saying 20,000 commuters will be affected.
Since the city moved to 100 per cent renewable-sourced electricity, the vast majority of its emissions have come from transport — nearly all private vehicles.
