Police in the United Kingdom have warned candidates in the upcoming December general election to not campaign alone or in the dark.

Female MPs have also been told to install panic buttons in their homes as threats of death and sexual violence rise.

In 2016, a Labour MP, Jo Cox, was stabbed to death when meeting with her constituents a week out from the EU referendum.

18 female MPs have decided to not recontest next month’s election, with many citing the rise in violence directed towards them as a reason for leaving politics, with the situation being described as increasingly toxic and vitriolic.
