South Burnett Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff is dressing the town of Proston in pink in an effort to tackle mental health issues in the wake of severe droughts and floods.

Councillor Duff is using her love of pink to raise awareness of rural mental health after losing her partner to suicide.

With the money from her partner’s inheritance, Councillor Duff donated seven shops to not-for-profit community group Proston Queensland, which have been decked out in bright pinks.

Councillor Duff says financial hardships are taking a toll on residents and fears the town could disappear if there is no community action.

"I've seen the town dying, when my dad and grandfather grew up in this community, there were picture theatres, butchers, the whole town was thriving," Cr Duff said.
