From the geniuses that brought you Titanic The Movie, The Play and Die Hard The Movie, The Play - ACT/REACT are back with another satirical attack on cinema. Speed The Movie, The Play is now happening at Brisbane Powerhouse.
STMTP is actually having a reprisal performance, after receiving praise last year the show is literally back by popular demand. So, if you missed out last year, now is your chance. But don’t let it getaway on you, the show is having a select run as part of the Brisbane Comedy Festival, until March 22nd. If this is your first time attending an ACT/REACT special performance here’s three important warnings, or things to look forward to, depending on your personality.
It’s not called ACT/REACT for fun. This is truly immersive theatre at it’s best. You’ll have more fun if you get on the bandwagon with this one, or in this case, the bus. Hold on tight and enjoy this wild ride. Who knows? You might even get your big acting break yourself if you’re paying attention. Oh, and here’s a tip that I myself learnt the hard way on the night. Make sure you’re reading the lines on the cue cards, and not the stage directions.
If you’re looking for the next Angels In America, or modern Henrik Ibsen – drive on my friend. ACT/REACT are in the business of laughs, satire and a good old fashion pun or two. You’re attending the Brisbane Comedy Festival after all. Highbrow theatre was a few stops ago, and it’ll be quite a few more miles before you see another serious moment.
You don’t need to see the movie first. If you haven’t kept up to date on Keanu, that’s okay! The ACT/REACT cast are there to transport you to the world of Speed, not judge you for not having seen the 1994 crime thriller classic. Seriously, how haven’t you seen Speed? I digress.
Here’s a bonus tip on the house. Because it can quite literally be a bumpy ride, there is no food or beverages allowed during the performance, boozy or not. I applaud the security guard for his performance, telling every single patron approaching the stairs that they cannot take their beverages, even in plastic cups, to the performance all the while with a smile, despite every sigh and filthy look he received, was truly astounding. Bravo, but for his sake, no encore I hope.
