Nicaraguan Human Rights Violations Prompts Further US Sanctions

The United States today has commenced sanctions against the Nicaraguan National Police force in response to human rights abuses in the central American nation. 

 

In a statement the US department of Treasury outlined that the Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega who has been in office since 2007, has utilized the NNP for the violent suppression of pro-democracy activists and citizenry

 

According to the US department of Treasury, the NNP’s activities include using live ammunition against peaceful protests, extra-judicial killings and kidnappings. 

 

In a statement on Thursday US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged the Ortega regime to cease human rights violations and create conditions for free elections.
