As a result of climate change, the quality and availability of potable groundwater has come under threat.

A new study conducted  by the University of New South Wales has found that climate change and urbanisation are expected to cause an increase in groundwater organic carbon, which would impact people relying on this source, which is more than half the world's population.

Drinking water contaminants have been identified as the root cause for more that 100,000 lifetime cancer cases in the United States. This would also result in water treatment costs increasing, The UNSW looks forward to conducting further research to determine the most effective water treatment options.
