Protesters have been fined over $8000 for incorrect social distancing practices at a ‘picnic protest’ in Kangaroo Point this morning.

The protest was conducted in support of refugees detained at the Kangaroo Point Central Hotel for almost a year.

Protesters say they planned to follow new social distancing guidelines by picnicking on the footpath outside the hotel in a show of solidarity with the refugees, but police did not accept the demonstration complied with social distancing legislation.

The refugees’ detention has been condemned by several human rights organisations.
