Police in Hong Kong have fired tear gas and used water cannons at protesters against Beijing's plan to impose national security laws on the city.

On Sunday protesters took to the shopping district of the city for the first time since Beijing proposed the national security laws with protestors calling the legislation an "evil law". The new law is expected to be passed May 28th however international concern has been raised with figures around the world saying the laws are a "comprehensive assault on the city's autonomy, rule of law and fundamental freedoms".

The rallies Sunday are a continuation of the months-long pro-democracy movement that began last year over the proposed laws and concerns for the country's "one country, two systems principle".
