- Cavern Of Anti-Matter have just released their soundtrack to Peter Strickland’s 2018 film In Fabric. Strickland, who is unapologetically indebted to old Euro-horror and giallo films really outdid himself with In Fabric (in my opinion). Wryly funny and absurd, it’s a sprawling movie that takes you through different textures and mise-en-scene. This is realised in part by the rich imagery and by the exceptional score. Cavern Of Anti-Matter (made up of Stereolab’s Tim Gane and Joe Dilworth with Holger Zapf) sent long compositions to the director at the early stages of the film's development. Some of those initial demos were used for the final product – a sumptuous mix of audio and visual, with some memorable themes to boot!

Like the film the score is on the longer side - running at two hours. The first couple of tracks are different iterations of the main theme, an evocative progression interpreted on the harpsichord, synthesiser, guitar, piano, et al. A lot of the arrangements are a masterful combination of electronic and acoustic instruments, many of them being subtle compositions and cues without drums.

There are exceptions to this though as a couple of the tracks have percussive elements or drum machine. Elektro-Modulator 2 is an uptempo instrumental with a pulsating drum rhythm and dubbed out claps and snares.

Taktron Delay sounds like a heavily distorted drum machine stuck to a cha-cha preset. Speaks Machine sounds almost like some ancient breaks with its shuffling 808 patterns and upward-arpeggios.

Then there are instrumentals with more disconcerting atmospheres, such as the epic Cold Fabric (Transformation), with its minor chord progression and phasing string synth. Queue Nightfall and Cold Fabric (Incantation) are similar in this regard, with electronic tones coming together to make unnerving soundscapes. These are contrasted by tracks like the beautiful and blissful Inside Luckmoore, which sounds entirely acoustic and makes great use of picked guitar arpeggios. Mannequin Metric is another melodic masterpiece complete with chimes, harpsichord, soft guitars and electronic elements.

It's equally like electronic scores of the '80s (by the likes of Carlos Peron), and progged out Italian library scores of the '70s (by the like of Franco Micalizzi). Cavern Of Anti-Mater has produced a memorable score, suiting the worlds Strickland evokes perfectly.
